Harry Peter “Bud” Grant, Jr. (born May 20, 1927) is a former American football and Canadian football head coach who coached at the collegiate and professional levels. Coach Bud Grant coached the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) for eighteen seasons, winning the Super Bowl twice. Grant served as the team’s second (1967–1983) and fourth (1985) head coach, respectively. Prior to taking over as head coach of the Vikings, he spent 10 seasons as the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL), during which time the team won the Grey Cup four times. Grant, in addition to being the most successful coach in Vikings history, is the third most successful professional football coach in history, behind only Don Shula and George Halas, with a combined 290 victories in the NFL and Canadian Football League (CFL). Among his many honours are induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He was the only coach in the history of professional football to lead teams to the Grey Cup finals as well as the Super Bowl championship game in the same season. Grant attended the University of Minnesota, where he excelled in three sports: football, basketball, and baseball, among others. Following graduation, he went on to play professionally with the Minneapolis Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL), and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Grant is the only guy in history who has ever played professionally in both the NFL and the NBA, and he remains the only one. An equestrian monument of Bud will be erected in front of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ new stadium, Investors Group Field, on October 22nd, 2014, in recognition of his contributions to the club.
